卦辞（THE JUDGMENT）

需、有孚。光亨。貞吉。利渉大川。

WAITING. If you are sincere,

You have light and success.

Perseverance brings good fortune.

It furthers one to cross the great water.

彖伝（THE EXPLAINING）

彖曰、需須也。険在前也。

剛健而不陥、其義不困窮矣。

需有孚、光亨、貞吉、位乎天位、以正中也。

利渉大川、往有功也。

象伝（THE IMAGE）

象曰、雲上於天需。君子以飲食宴楽。

Clouds rise up to heaven:

The image of WAITTING.

Thus the superior man eats and drinks,

Is joyous and of good cheer.

爻辞（THE LINE）

初九。需于郊。利用恒。无咎。

象曰、需于郊、不犯難行也。利用恒、无咎、未失常也。

Nine at the beginning means:

Eating in the meadow.

It furthers one to abide in what endures.

No blame.

九二。需于沙。小有言、終吉。

象曰、需于沙、衍在中也。雖小有言、以終吉也。

Nine in the second place means:

Waiting on the sand.

There is some gossip.

The end brings good fortune.

九三、需于泥。致寇至。

象曰、需于泥、災在外也。自我致寇、敬慎不敗也。

Nine in the third place means:

Waiting in the mud

Brings about the arrival of the enemy.

六四。需于血。出自穴。

象曰、需于血、順以聴也。

Six in the fourth place means:

Waiting in blood.

Get out of the pit.

九五。需于酒食。貞吉。

象曰、酒食貞吉、以中正也。

Nine in the fifth place means:

Waiting at meat and drink.

Perseverance brings good fortune.

上六。入于穴。有不速之客三人来。敬之終吉。

象曰、不速之客三人来。敬之終吉、雖不当位、未大失也。

Six sat the top means:

One falls into the pit.

Three uninvited guests arrive.

Honor them, and in the end there will be good fortune.
